Paul Valéry

Paul Valéry

Paul Valéry was a French poet and philosopher. Apart from poetry and fiction, his works also contained a large number of essays and aphorisms based on art, history, letters, music, diatribes, current events, history and human nature. One of the central ideas of Valéry’s philosophy is that the share of actual knowledge included within any doctrine or intellectual construction is precisely measured by the range of the power over things it grants us. His writing on poetic theory, arguing that the process of creation is more important than the eventual product, also revolved around the same idea. His preoccupation with the workings of his own mind and with the eternal problems of life’s choices was his obsession. To him, poetry was philosophy, whereby analyzing the conflict between emotion and intellect and being and nonbeing summarized the driving force behind most of his work.
